• Can you repair blobs on my recently varnished wooden floors?

  The appearance of blobs may be a result of an insufficient bonding between the different coats of varnish or between the first coat of floor varnish and the timber.

  This sometimes happens if the floors have not been perfectly sanded to a very smooth finish before the application of the varnish or when the previous sealant was not completely sanded down before the new varnish was applied.

  The only solution we would recommend is to re-sand and re-varnish the floors again to ensure a smooth sanded surface and a proper application of the coats of varnish on top, ideally done by a professional flooring company to avoid this happening again.

  However, you need to ensure that your floors have a sufficient remaining solid wood top layer available for another sanding. Each time the floor is sanded, a small portion of the top layer is removed. If the top layer becomes too thin, further sanding could potentially expose the underlying core material. It’s essential to measure the remaining thickness of the wear layer to confirm whether sanding is a viable option.

• Dog urine stains removal from an oak engineered flooring

  Urine stains on timber floors can be particularly challenging to remove. Ideally, the stains should be cleaned up immediately, as it's not just the liquid but the compounds in the urine that cause discoloration. Unfortunately, urine tends to penetrate deep into the wood. So, restoration (floor sanding & refinishing) will not be an option in this case.

  The best solution is often to replace the affected planks. Going with the option for the local replacement of planks is the best approach for the floor repairs, however, this requires having spare planks that match your existing flooring. • Make teak parquet flooring colour lighter or keep it natural

  Hi Amy,

  Before sealing, unfinished teak can resemble oak in its light color. However, once sealed, teak typically darkens to a rich brownish hue.

  Like other exotic timbers, teak can be tricky to seal with normal water-base primers and lacquers. It will leave darker shaded streaks in areas where the roller has overcoated the previous pass. To avoid this, a solvent-based primer is used, e.g. Junckers SP Primer. This type of primer provides the best base for finishing exotic timbers, and it will make the original wood colour stand out even more with a rich, deep tone.

  If you prefer to keep the unfinished look of the teak or make it lighter, the only options available will be to use invisible / raw lacquer, like the Bona Mega Natural lacquer (or similar), or stain the floors with white-tinted primer (whitewash), such as Bona White primer or Junckers Prelak White. 

  The challenge here is how to apply these products on teak timber and avoid roller marks during the application. Applying these finishes on teak can be challenging, and we highly recommend to have a professional with experience in exotic woods handle the application.

  Ideally, timbers like teak, merbau, mahogany, walnut, jatoba should be left in their natural look.

  The duration of a wooden floor restoration service largely depends on the size and current condition of your floor, the type of wood and finish chosen, and the specific processes involved. For an area size of approx. 40 sqm, the process of sanding and applying a new finish can take anywhere from 2 to 4 days.

  This timeframe accounts for multiple stages including initial assessment, potential repairs (such as replacing damaged blocks or filling gaps), dust-free sanding down to bare wood, and the application of several coats of protective finish with a drying time of approx. 2 - 6 hours, depending on the type.
